Road Department Memo: The past, present, and future

The Wallowa County Road Department holds jurisdiction over more than 700 miles of roads, comprising three different road surfaces – dirt, gravel and asphalt. Many of these roads were constructed over a century ago, with a significant number dating back to the late 1800’s. At that time, roads were “cut” into the surface. Cutting a road consisted of clearing brush and trees, then plowing the roadway out of the dirt and rock. These roads had little to no engineering and sat at or near the same level as the surrounding ground.

Umatilla National Forest prepares to implement fall prescribed burn plan

PENDLETON, Ore. (Sept. 15, 2023) — Fire management officials on the Umatilla National Forest are preparing to implement the Forest’s fall prescribed burn plan, which could impact camping and hunting opportunities in several hunting units across the Forest. Any associated road and trail closures will go into effect prior to and during burn operations, which typically take 2-5 days to complete. Hunters are advised to plan ahead and avoid camping in the designated prescribed burn areas during the 2023 hunting season.

Invitation to Bid East Moraine County Forest Stand 13A Commercial Thinning 57 Acres

The commercial thinning harvest consists of contractor selection of leave trees according to the prescription described in Exhibit A (attached); harvesting trees chosen by the contractor for saw log and pulp production, and hauling saw log material to either Idaho Forest Group in Lewiston, ID, or Boise Cascade in Elgin, OR, depending on the highest price, and approved by Wallowa County. Logging is to be “whole tree”, with processing at the landing. Landing slash is to be piled prior to termination of the contract.

Prescribed Burn Notice: Pomeroy Ranger District – Little George Prescribed Burn

Fire management officials on the Pomeroy Ranger District will continue prescribed burning today near Forest Service Road 4304-160 (south of Sweitzer Ridge). Umatilla National Forest employees intend to burn 70 acres today in this unit. This is part of the larger 200-acre Little George prescribed burn that is anticipated to take approximately two weeks to complete and will be implemented on week days.
